Practical technical support for organisations without a full-time web team

Extura helps organisations keep important websites and online platforms reliable, secure and maintainable. My advice is shaped by 25 years running a large UK online community, where uptime, search traffic, cost, technical debt and day-to-day operations all had to add up.

Common problems I help with

Many organisations rely on websites and systems that have grown over time. The setup mostly works, but nobody is quite sure how it fits together, what is safe to change, or what would happen if something broke.

  • Your website is slow, fragile or difficult to update.
  • Your developer, agency or volunteer has moved on and nobody fully understands the setup.
  • You are planning a redesign, CMS change or migration and do not want to lose search traffic.
  • Your hosting, DNS, backups, analytics or Cloudflare setup is unclear.
  • Your platform has old PHP, plugins or custom code that nobody wants to touch.
  • You run a community or user-generated-content site and need better moderation processes.
Where to start

Clear ways to begin

Website and platform health check

from £750

A fixed-scope review of your site, hosting, DNS, backups, security basics, analytics, speed and SEO risks. You get a plain-English report of what is working, what is fragile, the quick wins and what to do next.

Redesign or migration review

from £950

Independent technical input before you commit to a new site, CMS change, hosting move or forum migration. I review the plan, the likely risks, the SEO implications and the questions to ask before you sign anything.

Legacy website review

from £1,200

For old PHP, WordPress, custom CMS or plugin-heavy sites that nobody wants to touch. I work out what you have, what is risky, what can be improved, and whether you actually need a rebuild.

Part-time technical partner

from £450/month

A few hours of senior technical input each month: supplier conversations, platform advice, risk reviews and a second opinion when something matters. Useful when you need experienced oversight but cannot justify a full-time technical lead.

Most engagements start with a short call to agree scope and a fixed price before any work begins. Support can be one-off, project-based or light-touch ongoing. The aim is practical progress, not unnecessary rebuilds or expensive retainers.

Services

What I can help with

Platforms and modernisation

Legacy PHP modernisation

Modernising ageing PHP codebases without the risk of a full rewrite. An incremental approach moves legacy applications towards modern frameworks such as Laravel while the existing system stays live.

Platform migrations

Planning and running migrations between web platforms, CMSs and forum systems. Content, user data, URL structures and SEO continuity are treated as core parts of the work rather than afterthoughts.

AI integration

Adding maintainable AI features to existing products. My own moderation platform uses a modular design with swappable providers, which avoids depending on a single vendor or model.

Infrastructure and growth

Performance and infrastructure

Diagnosing performance problems across the full stack, from database queries and application code to caching and server configuration. Building and tuning Linux, Nginx, MySQL and PHP environments that hold up under real traffic.

DNS, CDN and Cloudflare

Configuring DNS, CDN and Cloudflare for speed, reliability and security. This includes caching rules, edge configuration, SSL, origin protection and practical troubleshooting.

Technical SEO

Improving crawlability and site structure while protecting rankings through change. Migration-safe planning stops redesigns and platform moves from quietly costing you search traffic.

Content and online operations

Automated content pipelines

Automating repetitive publishing and content workflows using structured generation, review stages and deployment into systems such as WordPress. Human approval stays in the process where it matters.

Online safety and compliance

Helping platforms work towards their obligations under the UK Online Safety Act: moderation processes, content policy, record keeping and the practical tooling needed to evidence compliance for services that host user-generated content. This is operational support, not legal advice or compliance certification.

Community operations and moderation

Helping active communities manage moderation, content policy and operational workload at scale. This covers moderation tooling, AI-assisted review, escalation processes and practical strategies for healthier discussion.

Why Extura

Advice from someone who runs the whole web stack

I'm William, and for 25 years I have run DIYnot, a long-established UK DIY and home-improvement community with hundreds of thousands of members and several million page views a month at peak. I have looked after the whole thing end to end: engineering, infrastructure, publishing and the commercial side that keeps it going.

That covers PHP and MySQL at scale, Linux server administration, DNS and CDN configuration, major platform migrations, and more recently Laravel, Python and AI-assisted development. When I advise on a technical decision, it is usually because I have already had to live with one like it.

Extura is based on the UK's London-Stansted-Cambridge corridor and works remotely with clients across the UK and further afield.

A good fit

Who this suits

Extura works best with organisations where the website genuinely matters to the business or mission, but sits below the point where a full-time technical hire makes sense.

That often means publishers, membership bodies, directories, community and forum owners, founder-led businesses, and smaller charities and local organisations: anywhere an important site is being kept going without a dedicated technical team. It might be an ageing WordPress site, a custom PHP platform, a complex hosting setup, a planned redesign, or simply a website that has become too important to leave unmanaged.

It is less suited to organisations looking only for cheap brochure-site design, general IT support, or a full outsourced development team.
